Kyrie Irving’s ‘lack of respect’ for Nets head coach Steve Nash reportedly is a major issue amid extension talks

Brooklyn Nets superstar Kyrie Irving has had his fair share of up and downs throughout his tenure with the Brooklyn Nets — mostly downs if we’re being honest. And now that he’s in the middle of contract negotiations with his current team, there have been multiple reports about his ongoing issue with head coach Steve Nash.

Irving does not respect Nash
According to Fox Sports’ NBA writer Ric Bucher, one of the reasons why Brooklyn does not want to give Irving a max contract is because of the latter’s lack of respect for his head coach. Bucher said that maybe it’s because Nash didn’t win a title as a player, nor has he won one as a coach. This wouldn’t be a shocker, as Irving once went on the record to say that he didn’t see the Nets as a team with just one head coach. He also reportedly conducted his own practices with his teammates without Nash having any idea.

With these issues in mind, it’s understandable why the Nets are reportedly hesitant to offer Irving a max contract. Currently, both pirates are negotiating for an extension, but it has been reported that there’s been an impasse in terms of an agreement. The Nets don’t believe Irving deserves a max contract because of his lack of commitment, chaos, and the complications he brings to the organization.

Who’s going to blink first?
The negotiating process between Irving’s camp and the Nets will last for days or even weeks, depending on who decides to blink first. Irving’s representatives have already leaked to the media that the one-time champion would consider his other suitors, specifically Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers, and the New York Knicks, if the Nets don’t give him the contract he wants.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn remains steadfast on the idea that they do not want to offer Irving the max because, as mentioned above, they don’t believe in his availability.

The Nets have also said that they don’t plan on parting ways with Nash, who they hired in 2020 to lead the team. So if they do end up bringing back Irving, the team will have to consider his relationship with Nash, who he reportedly has a lack of respect for.

This is what happens when you employ the most unpredictable player in the NBA. Irving is arguably one of the best point guards and scorers in the game, but the baggage he brings to every team is detrimental to their overall success.
